Abstract

This course introduces students to concepts and skills needed to gain an understanding of practices essential to pursuing a career in health care. Students will participate in didactic and experiential learning emphasizing both foundational conceptual learning and technical skills. The course content will focus on health occupations, including an introduction to health settings, careers, and principles of patient care; concepts of ethics and bioethics which includes an exploration of issues related to ethical behavior and decision making in health professions; safety practices including infection control, personal and environmental safety, and emergency procedures and protocols; common and emerging diseases and disorders. Students have an opportunity to learn the skills needed to provide basic care including vital signs, to review and practice concepts of medical math, and to review CPR and first aid.
