Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the trainee will be able to do the following:
- Identify and explain groove welds.
- Identify and explain groove welds with backing.
- Set up shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) equipment for making V-groove welds.
- Perform SMAW for V-groove welds with backing and pass a bend test in the following positions:
- Flat (1G)
- Horizontal (2G)
- Vertical (3G)
- Overhead (4G)
Performance Tasks
Under the supervision of the instructor, the trainee shall be able to demonstrate:
- Set up arc welding equipment for making groove welds.
- Make flat welds with backing on V-groove joints using E7018 electrodes.
- Make horizontal welds with backing on V-groove joints using E7018 electrodes.
- Make vertical welds with backing on V-groove joints using E7018 electrodes.
- Make overhead welds with backing on V-groove joints using E7018 electrodes.
Safety Considerations
Ensure that you (the student) are ALWAYS equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment.
A review of general safety guidelines associated with arc welding, including electrical safety will be emphasized.
- Face shields must be worn to prevent injury from hot slag.
- Warn the trainees of the dangers of hot weld coupons.
The importance of proper housekeeping will also be emphasized.
Additional Resources
This course is intended to present thorough resources for task training. The following reference works are open reference and are suggested for both instructors and motivated trainees interested in further study.
